This entry is part of a five-part series on “terrible communities”: 1. All Communities are Terrible Communities. 2. Terrible Outcomes of Terrible Communities. 3. A Less Foolish Power Literacy. 4. Terrible People in Terrible Communities. 5. An Antidote to Terrible Communities
I sense there are words that are no longer used that would better suit the various groups calling themselves "community". This video with Vervaeke, Mastropietro, and Sweeney breaks down Philia and friendship, and highlights the importance of using words like colleague, buddy, fellow, and so on. The word "friend" is overused and abused (thank you, Facebook!)
I never felt like The Stoa was even attempting to be a community, and wouldn't have guessed this Substack would be described as such. I do appreciate the intimacy I have felt in Stoa and other spaces. I'm particularly interested in the Intimacy without Friendship part the diagram. I experience it a lot and feel like it has an important place in my life, but perhaps I'm fooling myself.

This is why I stayed at the Stoa, and always felt that it was in a proper relationship with respect to the 'metacrisis'.
The best online community that I have found is Emergent Commons.
Intrigued to read your future terrible people entry. I spot those first two everywhere...
