August 28, 2020
I woke up today with some big daemon energy.
I got drinks with an old friend last night, and the best part of the night was something that I cannot write about. It was nothing too scandalous, but it would be in bad taste to share. It was a symbolic act, one that had surprising therapeutic value.
I was feeling naughty this morning, the type of naughty that wants to slap Camille’s behind followed by a wink that only a Stoic daddy could give. It is an innocent naughty of course, with a touch of devilishness. When I get like this I know it is time to create.
This energy does not last forever, but it feels like it will be here for some while. I will surely be singing the existential blues again, so now it is time to create what is asking to be created while I have daemonic momentum. So many good sessions happened this week. So much life is happening here.
I am a little irked that The Stoa is not more well known, as it is offering so much value, but it is only 5 months old, and it has some marketing barriers. The confusing “this is not about Stoicism but maybe it is about Stoicism” branding does not help, nor does all the weird inaccessible event titles with lazily written event descriptions.
But despite all of this, this place is becoming pretty popular. I was talking to Jared Janes the other day, and he said that metric-wise The Stoa is doing really well. Having 90+ patrons at this point in a creative project is pretty good apparently. It blows my mind actually, and I am moved when somebody is moved to financially support this project. I have not even set up any gimmicky tier system on Patreon or anything like that.
I like doing things for free. This seems where the magic is at. While everything else is behind a fucking paywall these crazy good-looking kids at The Stoa are offering almost 20 events a week for free. And these events are well thought-out: designed and delivered with love.
People are asking me how I am getting all these people visiting The Stoa. I do not know. Maybe I have a tight metagame, with that “I am a flawed human being” boyish charm, which fellow authenticity perverts seem to dig. That is probably not the whole of why. It is probably also because people are sensing the potential of this place. It does not have that cookie-cutter online business model vibe. If you are trying to steal the culture, you have to do things differently.
I would eventually like to have Stoa courses, full-time facilitators, and stuff like that. It would make sense to charge money for those, to ensure quality and participant commitment. Now is not the time for that because now is the time for The Stoa to become the hub of sensemaking, and I sense it needs to be unpolished, undefined, and unpretentious to do so…
Well, maybe it can be a little pretentious for a bit longer. I do like using unnecessary ridiculous terms.
