February 6th, 2021
I woke up 30 minutes ago, checked Twitter in order to stay awake, and saw this tweet from our girl Nora Bateson …
De-mapping = unclaiming
De-harvesting = allowing fertilizing to occur
De-modelling = untying from existing establishment
De-strategizing = allowing unimagined possibilities
Wild underground unsaid unknown undefined = a possibility zone. The system cannot change the system.
I replied: Re-Yummy!
Yeah, that was not one of my best tweets, but I did just wake up. Something was delicious about the “wild underground unsaid unknown undefined” thing, and how it equals a possibility zone. It also sounds familiar eh.
The Stoa is a possibility zone. We need more possibility zones. Perhaps it is a possibility zone because it is still somewhat unknown, compared to other places, and it might lose this quality if it gets more popular. The Stoa has grown as a word-of-mouth thing, and we got no boost from legacy media.
I am feeling like legacy media may catch up to it soon, as the people who are becoming aware of this place seem pretty well-connected and influential. You’ll need to feed legacy media with an angle that is a part of their pre-existing “this is what I can report on” scripts for them to report on us though. Instead of calling it a digital campfire they will frame us as a podcast, and saying this place is addressing the meaning crisis and meta-crisis will not go too far with them, but if it was addressing mental health issues or systemic racism it would.
It is probably good that legacy media is not reporting on us, because them slapping their old models on us would be like them casting a spell, and we’d then have to do some de-spelling. This might not be a bad thing actually. It might be good practice, and our de-spelling might be annoyingly seductive to the journos.
I do think that all that de-ing that Nora mentioned does lead to a possibility zone, but the pace needs to be considered as well. If the de-ing happens too fast and aggressively, then you might end up in a cult, especially if you are bounded by some commune-style physical space. I sense a decentralized slow spiritual strip tease approach is better, with everyone stripping at their own pace in a way that increases their sovereignty, not decreasing it.
It is the sovereign ones that will make the “unimagined possibilities” become imaginable. The best imagination is the one that gets us to the next, and we need to imagine in a way that outfoxes the powerful spell-casters trying to keep us in epistemic prisons.
We will not let that happen, because the epistemic prison break is happening, and we need your imagination in the game in order to make it happen.
